Graduation season brings a whirlwind of emotions – excitement, fear, anticipation, and uncertainty all rolled into one. Whether you’re a recent graduate stepping into adulthood or someone facing a major life transition, the question remains the same: “What’s next?” While we often want life to come with a clear roadmap, the reality is that God calls us to trust Him one step at a time.

Why Trust Feels So Difficult

Trust appears 193 times in the Bible – and there’s a reason for that frequency. We all struggle with trust, whether it’s trusting our children, our parents, our friends, or even ourselves. The challenge becomes even greater when we’re asked to trust God with our uncertain future.

When we say we trust someone, we can’t do it halfway. Trust isn’t 50% or 75% – that’s just hoping or wishful thinking. True trust means going all in, like diving into a pool rather than slowly wading in. The question we must ask ourselves is: Are we fully trusting God with our future, or are we just hoping things work out?

What Does the Bible Say About Trusting God?

Our foundation comes from Proverbs 3:5-6: “‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do and he will show you which path to take.'”

This passage reveals two crucial truths about navigating life’s transitions and uncertainties.

God Will Show Us the Path

The promise is clear: God will show us which path to take. But notice the condition – we must “seek his will in all you do.” Not just when we’re confused or having a bad day, but in everything we do.

Many of us play spiritual “hide and peek” instead of truly seeking God’s will. Like children who run past their hiding parent multiple times, we often look for quick answers rather than intentionally searching for God’s direction. True seeking requires action and intentionality from us.

Just because God leads us down a particular path doesn’t mean we’ll stay on that path forever. Paths can go up, down, and sometimes feel upside down. They might be difficult or unexpected. But when we truly seek God’s will in everything, He promises to show us where He wants us to go.

God Will Be Our Light on the Path

Psalm 119:105 tells us: “‘Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.'” Notice it doesn’t say God provides a headlight or spotlight – He gives us a lamp.

When we walk outside at night, we use a flashlight to see where we’re stepping, not to illuminate the entire area. Similarly, God’s Word sheds light on our immediate steps and helps us avoid dangerous obstacles along the way.

What Are the “Legos” in Your Path?

As we navigate life’s transitions, we’ll encounter various obstacles – like stepping on Legos in the dark. For graduates and young adults, these might include:

  • Credit card companies offering high-interest debt
  • Professors challenging your faith foundations
  • New friend groups pressuring you to compromise your values
  • Relationships that pull you away from God’s path

Most people don’t wake up one day and decide to ruin their future. Instead, they ignore small compromises that slowly trip them up along the path. This is why allowing God to be our light is so crucial – it helps us avoid these spiritual “Legos” that can derail our journey.

How God Uses Others to Light Our Path

Sometimes God uses other people to shed light on the path He wants us to take. He might use a spouse, friend, mentor, or family member to provide clarity about His direction for our lives.

The key is remaining open to how God might speak through others while still seeking His will directly through prayer and His Word.

When You’ve Strayed from the Path

If you’ve wandered from God’s path, remember that Jesus wants to shed light for you to find your way back. This room is full of people who have probably strayed once or twice, but Jesus helped them return to His path.

We’re all on this journey together, at different stages of life – whether graduating, starting careers, getting married, raising families, or facing other transitions. God walks alongside us every step of the way.

Life Application

This week, commit to truly seeking God’s will rather than just “peeking” for quick answers. Set aside intentional time each day to pray about your next steps and read God’s Word for guidance. Instead of trying to figure everything out on your own, practice full trust by surrendering your plans to God and asking Him to light your path one step at a time.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I fully trusting God with my future, or am I just hoping things work out?
  • Am I intentionally seeking God’s will in all areas of my life, or only when I’m confused?
  • What “Legos” (compromises or temptations) do I need God’s light to help me avoid?
  • How can I better position myself to hear God’s direction for my next steps?

Remember, you don’t have to have your entire future figured out. God simply calls you to trust Him with your next step, knowing that He will be faithful to guide you along the way.
