What does it mean to truly follow Jesus in a way that brings joy and growth to your life? At Grace Church, our mission statement concludes with a powerful phrase: “to live as joyful, growing followers of Jesus.” These three characteristics aren’t just nice ideals—they’re essential markers of authentic Christian living.

What Does It Mean to Be Joyful Christians?

Joy in the Christian life goes far deeper than temporary happiness. While happiness depends on circumstances, joy is an abiding presence of the Lord that doesn’t fade when life gets difficult. You can still smile through hardship because there’s a deep, unshakeable joy within you.

This joy should be evident in our church experience. Coming to church should be the most joyful part of your week. There’s something beautiful about gathering together, shaking hands, giving hugs, and experiencing the harmony of trusting Jesus as a community.

Why Should Church Be Enjoyable?

Paul’s letters to churches frequently use words like encouragement, building up, harmony, and peace—all enjoyable concepts. Romans 14:17-19 tells us that “the kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”

The goal is to strike a healthy balance of biblical accuracy that produces a graciously joyful environment. This means appreciating the many beautiful facets of worship while maintaining grace when we don’t always see eye to eye.

Why Is Spiritual Growth Essential?

Healthy things grow. When we stop growing spiritually, something has gone terribly wrong. Just as we celebrate when children grow physically, we should expect and encourage spiritual growth in believers.

Scripture consistently emphasizes growth as a natural part of the Christian life:

  • 2 Peter 3:18: “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”
  • 1 Timothy 4:15: “Practice these things, immerse yourself in them so that all may see your progress”
  • 1 Peter 2:2: “Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk that by it you may grow up into salvation”

How Does Spiritual Growth Happen?

Churches can provide environments where growth is possible through worship services, life groups, and various ministries. However, the church can’t grow for you—that requires your active participation and cooperation with the Holy Spirit’s work in your life.

What Does Following Jesus Really Look Like?

Following Jesus is more about direction than perfection. This might seem confusing when Scripture calls us to “be perfect” and “be holy,” but understanding our position in Christ clarifies this apparent contradiction.

Understanding Positional vs. Progressive Holiness

Hebrews 10:12-14 reveals a beautiful truth: “For by that one offering, he forever made perfect those who are being made holy.” This means two things happen simultaneously:

Positional Perfection: Through Jesus’ perfect sacrifice, when God looks at you, He sees Christ’s perfection covering you. You’re forgiven, given the Holy Spirit, and viewed through the lens of perfection rather than judgment.

Progressive Sanctification: While positionally perfect, you still live on this side of eternity, wrestling with temptation and struggling with sin. The Holy Spirit works in you to make you become what you’ve already been declared to be.

The Marathon Runner Analogy

Think of it like registering for a half marathon. Once you register and pay, you’re officially a marathon runner—that’s your declared status. But then you must train to become what you’ve been declared to be, running daily and gradually increasing distance until race day.

Similarly, when you accept Christ, you’re declared holy and perfect. The rest of your life involves the Spirit working in you to shape you into what you’ve been positioned as, until one day you’ll be fully manifested in perfection.

How Do We Cooperate with the Holy Spirit?

Following Christ isn’t about running your own race or working your way to holiness. It’s about cooperating with the Holy Spirit’s work in you. The Spirit strengthens, guides, and illuminates Scripture for you. When He nudges you that something needs to change, you respond in obedience, knowing you stand perfected in God’s eyes while actively following His leading.

Life Application

This week, examine your spiritual life in three key areas. First, assess your joy level—are you experiencing the deep, abiding joy of the Lord that transcends circumstances? Second, evaluate your growth—is there clear direction in your life toward godliness, even if you’re not perfect? Third, consider your following—are you actively cooperating with the Holy Spirit’s nudging in your daily decisions?

Choose one area where you need the most growth and take a specific step this week. If you lack joy, spend time in worship and gratitude. If you’ve stopped growing, engage with Scripture or join a small group. If you’re not following well, practice listening to and obeying the Holy Spirit’s promptings.

Ask yourself these questions: What is stealing my joy, and how can I surrender it to God? Where have I become complacent in my spiritual growth? What is the Holy Spirit asking me to change, and will I cooperate with His work in my life?
